“All old vehicle windscreens used to end up in landfill but on a recent visit to 5R Solutions Limited I saw how they are now being recycled and turned into high grade swimming pool filter material for export.
Glass never degrades in landfill. Once it’s in a landfill it stays there forever which is why diverting and recycling glass is so important.
NZ does a reasonable, but could be better, job on recycling glass bottles and jars but flat glass (think old windows from demolished buildings and windscreens) all used to go to landfill.
Now Chris Grant and his team at 5R Solutions in Christchurch are recycling flat glass and vehicle windscreens. Currently they are processing about 55% of NZ’s windscreens with the aim of converting 100% in the next few years.
I really like that this glass waste that used to go to landfill is now being recycled and turned into a profitable export earner for NZ. I especially like that Chris tells me his business hasn’t received one single dollar of taxpayer subsidy. It’s clear his business is thriving thanks to his inventiveness and passion for solving a real environmental challenge. Well done Chris”. #Bluegreens 💙💚✔️
