SOUTH CANTERBURY'S RECYCLED GLASS TO BE SENT TO CHRISTCHURCH

A new purpose-built facility in Christchurch is set to take all of South Canterbury’s kerbside collected glass.

The facility, opened by Christchurch-based 5R Solutions on September 22, will double the company’s capacity to recycle glass.

The company has recently signed agreements to take the glass collected kerbside in the Timaru Mackenzie and Waimate districts.

“That equates to around 3000 tonnes of glass per year,” the company said in a press release.

The moves to have all the recycled glass for South Canterbury processed in Christchurch comes after other shakeups in the waste management sphere in the region.

In August, Timaru, Waimate and Mackenzie district councils announced they have joined forces to award a $112 million waste management contract that will see Envirowaste become the key supplier for the next 15 years. The contract is expected to begin in June 2021 for Waimate and Timaru, and October 2021 for Mackenzie.
